SAFEWebLK: Code of Practice consultations held in Hambantota

Hambantota, Sri Lanka, 19 November 2022

Convened by Factum, SAFEWebLK held its second round of consultations for the draft Code of Conduct for Online Safety at Shangri-La Hotel in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. The event featured participants from the country’s Southern Province, namely the Galle, Matara, and Hambantota Districts. They hailed from a number of sectors and fields, including civil society, the public sector, and the media.

The consultation was overseen by Dr Ranga Kalansooriya and Omar Rajaratnam. It wrapped up for lunch at 1.35 PM with a consensus that more grassroots consultations for issues like online safety are needed.

SAFEWebLK, inaugurated in mid-March this year at a multi-stakeholder event in Colombo, is a public interest initiative facilitated by Factum, an independent think tank based in Sri Lanka which focuses on international relations.

Collaboration with global and Asian tech companies has been and is being facilitated through their regional industry alliance, the Asia Internet Coalition (AIC).
