Ranga is a journalist and media academic from Sri Lanka with a wide experience in media development in Asia and Africa. His expertise covers conflicts and political violence in Asia, with working experience in Pakistan, Afghanistan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Sri Lanka. In 2013 he obtained Sri Lanka’s first PhD in News Journalism. His research studied the impact of Sri Lanka’s civil war in news reporting.
Ranga is a visiting lecturer in Journalism and Mass Communication Department at the Sri Jayewardenepura University and a visiting lecturer at the Journalism Department of the University of Colombo. He served as the Director General of Sri Lanka Press Institute, Sri Lanka College of Journalism, and Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka, as well as the Director General of Department of Information of the government of Sri Lanka.
His interests include media content, media regulation and media dynamics, and terrorism and political violence. He has presented papers at conferences in Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Indonesia, Türkiye, Myanmar, the Philippines, Kenya, South Africa, Afghanistan, Japan, South Korea, and Nepal on media, terrorism, and political violence issues.
Presently, he is the Regional Advisor for Asia of International Media Support Denmark.
