Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, 12 November 2022
Kickstarting a month-long series of multistakeholder consultations, SAFEWebLK held a session in Batticaloa on 12 November 2022, from 9 am to 2 pm. The event witnessed the participation of over 50 individuals drawn from a number of civil society groups and sectors. It was conducted by Dr Gehan Gunatilleke and Omar Rajaratnam.
At the consultation, the participants expressed their views on the proposed Code of Practice for Online Safety, particularly on its relevance to Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans. There were Q and A sessions at which the event’s organizers addressed a number of concerns put forward by regional civil society groups, including journalists and activists.
SAFEWebLK, inaugurated in mid-March this year at a multi-stakeholder event in Colombo, is a public interest initiative facilitated by Factum, an independent think tank based in Sri Lanka which focuses on international relations.
Collaboration with global and Asian tech companies has been and is being facilitated through their regional industry alliance, the Asia Internet Coalition (AIC).
